Criticism is often a destructive force—a mechanism for the ego to feel superior by tearing something else down. But true spiritual communication transforms criticism into a catalyst for growth.
Before you unleash judgment on any situation, person, or idea, pause and ask yourself: What positive alternative will I offer?
The Test of Reason
If you cannot immediately think of a reasonable, positive alternative for your criticism, then wait.Do not proceed. That unreasoned negativity is useless; it will never bring about a good change. It merely discharges negative energy.
For criticism to be spiritually aligned, it must happen as a positive process.
The Three Steps to Valuable Feedback
To ensure your feedback is effective and appreciated, reverse the typical process:
- Decide on the Positive Process First: Focus your entire mind on the solution, the betterment, and the ideal outcome before addressing the flaw.
- Be Alert to the Positive Process: Maintain the focus on the solution as you speak.
- Then, Criticize: Frame the observation of the flaw purely in service of the solution you’ve already identified.
When you master this approach, your criticism will be very valuable.
It will be appreciated even by those who are criticized, and no one will be offended by it. Why? Because even while you are pointing out the current inadequacy, you are constantly alert and suggesting something through some positive alternative.
You are not delivering judgment; you are delivering a vision.
